Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes’ red card was a big talking point in Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham, with fans taking to Twitter to voice their opinions on the matter.
Manchester United were humiliated by Spurs at Old Trafford, losing 3-0 in front of their home fans in a one-sided game that would have been 5-6 on any other day.
Former United captain Gary Neville described the performance as “terrible” and criticized the lack of quality and effort from both players and manager.
Brennan Johnson opened the scoring just three minutes after an incredible solo assist from centre-back Micky van de Ven.
Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke scored in the second half to give Ange Postecoglou’s side the three points.
However, Bruno Fernandes’ red card in the first half became a hot topic. Just before half-time, United’s captain was dismissed for his controversial attack on James Maddison.

The incident has drawn mixed reactions on social media, with some quick to defend Fernandes and label the red card as lenient, while others were less sympathetic.

never red

I hate Bruno as much as the next guy, but that wouldn’t be a red card in a million years. We have to talk about shit like that because it might be us next week. far from enough @FA_PGMOL

His left foot slipped, it was a perverse foul, a yellow at best, very harsh https://t.co/C1zdBN3m1Z

Just schedule a “I’m out of games” tweet every weekend.
Football these days is scary.

I can see why many people think this is a very harsh punishment for a gaffe. I’m having a hard time deciding if the lunge is a reaction to the slip or just an accident. But if there’s anyone who has been seen as grumpy in recent years, it’s Fernandes. pic.twitter.com/qBtxDzesMW

Twitter speaks out about Ten Hag and Manchester United
The defeat left United in the bottom half of the Premier League with just seven points from their first six games.
Erik ten Hag has come under fire again after his side suffered a 3-0 defeat in their last two league games at Old Trafford. Only Southampton have scored fewer goals than the Dutch side in the Premier League.
Fans of United and rival clubs alike have expressed their opinions on Ten Hag’s position as manager.
The manager will naturally be questioned, but how many of these players are playing in a completely shitty manner?

“Ten Hag can’t believe what he’s seeing, I can’t believe what I’m seeing.” You play like this about twice a month, Gary
— Harry Fong (@AAuthenticOutlaw) September 29, 2024
To be honest, I just don’t understand how you can look at Manchester United’s performance so far and blame it on any individual.
This, like United’s disorganized build-up versus Spurs’ very intense pressing, was just ETH’s coaching and tactics being punished.
— Alex (@EuroExpert_) September 29, 2024
Ever since he interviewed for his job in the summer, things have been unbearable for Ten Hag.
Once you’re in that situation, you basically have to keep coming up with convincing wins, otherwise it’s a problem that will never go away.

This is my third year.
What is our identity?
What exactly is our plan?
I’m tired.
