The United States leads the international team 11-7 heading into Sunday singles, the final session of the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club.
Patrick Cantlay sank a clutch birdie putt on the 18th hole while battling the setting sun Saturday afternoon, pushing him and partner Xander Schauffele ahead of Tom Kim and Siwoo Kim. Team Kim gave a lot of energy to the international team during the first three days of the competition, but will have to go it alone on Sunday.
Before the competition began, Golfweek’s Adam Shupack and Riley Hummel selected the players for the final session.
Here are the candidates for all Sunday singles matches for the Presidents Cup:
Presidents Cup: Leaderboard | Gala Photos | Photos
Adam Schupack: Schauffele said Saturday he has a dog in him. I feel like she’s a little more dog-like than Day. He is resting after the holidays, but he probably doesn’t have enough firepower to be ranked second in the world.
Riley Hummel: Xander was stuck Saturday afternoon but had a chance to give Team USA four points off a fast start. Please give me an X.
Adam Shupak: Sam Barnes is the only undefeated player this week. He’s shown even more excitement than he’s had in the past two teams and is the right guy to go head-to-head with Tom the Tank.
Riley Hummel: It has to be TK, right? He’s been on electricity all week and is thriving in this environment. International point.
Adam Shupack: This is a box office blockbuster. I hope the match is kept on the 18th. Scotty played a little different than usual, so I think Hideki can get at least a half point, maybe a full point, if he can putt well.
Riley Hummel: Scotty. I have to go with Scotty. He turned it on for the last 10 or so holes Saturday and plans to carry it into the final session.
Adam Shpack:
Riley Hummel: I’m going to bring Sungjae here. He’s already had some special moments this week and I think he’ll have another special moment with a win on Sunday.
Adam Shupak: This could end quickly. Pendrith doesn’t have relief from Adam Scott, so I like Cantlay at least a 4-3.
Riley Hummel: Patti Ice. he is cold he is a murderer I’ll take Cantlay.
Adam Shupak: Siu has been a star player in the past two Presidents Cups. There will be a lot of passion put into this. Siu may have another chance to use Stephen Curry’s sleep-time move to score extra points.
Riley Hummel: Siu, shaking that ass. He will look to beat the American Ryder Cup captain on Sunday.
Adam Shupak: Connors has played better this Presidents Cup, but while Finau continues to perform well in team events, he’s still disappointed with his putter. It’s close, but I like Finau.
Riley Hummel: Two great ball strikers. Two players who can get cold with putters. Give me a Canadian back home.
Adam Shupak: I think Clark had a great putting performance in the loss and gave Min Woo Lee a tough task, but Min Woo is upset that he has only played once. He has to stand up and show captain Mike Weir that he made a mistake. Full marks.
Riley Hummel: The chef is going to cook. He missed all of Saturday and will be well rested for his final fight.
Adam Shupak: You must have been tired of having to sit all day Saturday for Ann and Seagala. You can see Saheeth getting a W with a Mongolian reversal on the way.
Riley Hummel: I’m going with the new guy, Seagala. I think he can grow in this environment. He intends to make an early case for Ryder Cup singles.
Adam Shupak: This is one of my favorite matches and I hope it continues to be an important match as it could be a turning point if it happens. Scott is desperate for this win and will do everything he can to score points for his teammates.
Riley Hummel: Scott has been playing some great golf so far this week and will continue that streak with a win over Morikawa on Sunday.
Adam Shupak: This could turn into a pillow fight between two players who are a little off the game. In my head I think C. Bez is the candidate, but in my heart I think Herman is too gritty of a competitor and I can’t find a way to win. Nearby is Herman.
Riley Hummel: If the Georgia Bulldogs win on Saturday, give me Herman. If not, give me Herman. He’ll be upset about losing to Alabama again.
Adam Shupak: I’ve seen Max try to do some pretty cool things in the last few team games, and he’s even considering competing at the British Open in July. That being said, Homa is no Tiger Woods as he tied the Canadian who is also a gamer, but this is something like Weir’s Pyrrhic victory in Sunday singles at Royal Montreal in 2007. It will be.
Riley Hummel: I think it’s wrong to go against Max. That’s why I won’t go. Homa will get the job done here.
