ROCHESTER, MI – Oakland University swimmer Nicholas Karel Subagyo had an outstanding performance last week representing Jakarta Province in Indonesia during National Sports Week. Competing against some of the best athletes in the country for the first time, Karel not only represented Oakland University on the international stage, but he also brought home valuable experience and insights from the prestigious event.
The 2024 National Sports Week (PON XXI/PON ACEH-SUMUT 2024) will be the 21st edition of this mega multi-sport event, which will be held in Aceh and North Sumatra from 8 to 20 September 2024. This will be the first time that PON will be co-hosted by two provinces, the second in North Sumatra (the last time was in 1953) and the first in Aceh. It will also be the fourth PON in Sumatra, after Medan (1953), Palembang (2004) and Pekanbaru (2012).
Karel put in a fantastic performance, achieving personal best times in all five events.
His major achievements include:
Not only did he win the gold medal in the 400m freestyle and become National Champion, but he also set a new PON record with an amazing time of 3:56.40; a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay; a silver medal in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 15:46.80; a silver medal in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:50.61; a bronze medal in the 400m individual medley with a time of 4:33.87; and a personal best in the 200m individual medley with a time of 2:09.17.
Head coach Mitch Alters said he was proud of Karel’s achievement: “We are so proud of Karel for his success at Indonesia’s National Sports Week. Karel has been practicing hard all summer and it was emotional to see his hard work pay off in front of his family and friends.
