Willow Smith’s latest musical era has arrived and your hair-ruffling days have begun (sorry, couldn’t resist). When the 20-year-old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith first burst onto the music scene, she debuted with the iconic song “Whip My Hair.” And now, over a decade later, Willow has launched a new sound entitled “Transparent Soul” and we’re already obsessed with it. With “Transparent Soul,” Willow fully unleashes her pop-punk/alternative rock side, a drastic (but super fun) change from her typical ethereal R&B sound. Solidifying her entry into the genre, Willow has enlisted Blink-182’s Travis Barker on drums. Honestly, this is everything we didn’t know we needed from this singer. Willow is back, and she’s ready to shake up the music world.
“I’m so grateful for this song because it was written during a very introspective time (the first few months of quarantine),” she said in a Complex release. “It was the song that taught me that I needed to let go of my fears about making a project in this genre.” Honestly, the way Willow sings and dances to the lyrics with confidence makes it hard to imagine she was ever nervous about trying pop-punk music.

“I never know if it’s true or not/All your fake friends sell your secrets for money/Smile in my face, put out your cigarettes in my back,” Willow sings while strumming her guitar. Her collaboration with Barker is legendary in its own right, but watching Willow’s edgy performance as she flips the finger at the camera is a welcome testament to how much she’s grown as a mature artist.

Willow’s mother, Jada, was in a metal band as the lead singer of Wicked Wisdom, so it’s no surprise that Willow would want to try her hand at that sound. Whatever genre or sound Willow chooses next, one thing is clear: she’ll rock it every single time.
