FAIRMONT – The Fairmont girls tennis team set itself up for the upcoming postseason with a 5-2 win over Worthington in a Big South Conference tennis match on Monday.
“We tried a lot of different combinations in doubles today against Worthington,” assistant girls tennis coach Tim Slama said. “In singles we know what our teams are capable of, but in doubles it can be more difficult to find the right partners and the right combinations. We moved Carly Gustafson and Ella Ubena to No. 1 doubles and they played great and earned the win. Maddie Peyman and Claire Brockman moved from No. 1 doubles to No. 3 and No. 4 singles and both earned wins.”
Emilia Crandard won her first singles match against Hannah McNabb 6-1, 6-2. Despite McNabb’s strong serve, Crandard kept her composure and used her ability to place the ball in hard-to-reach spots to secure the win.
Alison Slama faced Chloe Martinez in the second singles match and used her solid serve and good ball control to win 6-1, 6-1.
Madisyn Peyman switched to singles that day and took on Emma Heitbrink in the third singles match. Her steady footwork and court control helped her win 6-0, 6-0.
Claire Brockman won her fourth round singles match against Lily Brown 6-2, 6-3. Brockman was able to control the match with her quickness and shot control.
The new pairing of Ubena and Gustafsson combined solid serving with great defense in the No. 1 doubles match against Mikayla Puampet and Sadie Nickel, leading Ubena and Gustafsson to a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Sam Thatcher and Ivy Schomburg lost their No. 2 doubles match to Eleanor Teerink and Kah Blue Moo, 7-5, 6-4. The Fairmont duo fought hard and won the seventh point, but were unable to close out the match.
Emily Wheeler and Hailey Greeley lost 3-6, 6-2, 7-10 to Ashley Esparza and Tianna Garcia at No. 3 doubles. After dropping the first set, Fairmont’s No. 3 doubles came back in the second set and took it to the third set, fighting hard for every point until their opponents closed out the match.
“We are having a great regular season so far with a 9-6 record despite being a very young team,” said coach Tim Slama. “We have sophomores at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, a seventh-year student at No. 2 singles and a freshman at No. 3 singles. We have been working through multiple lineup options to prepare the best lineup for the postseason, and we will be ready to take on USC in the first round next Monday.”
The Fairmont girls’ next game is Tuesday at Luverne before heading to play United South Central in the first round of the postseason on Monday.
