Vice President Kamala Harris met today with United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed at the White House to reaffirm the growing U.S.-UAE partnership and discuss joint efforts to promote a more secure, stable and prosperous Middle East region.
The Vice President welcomed the UAE’s continued leadership and close partnership with the United States in advanced technology, including the safe, secure and trusted use of artificial intelligence, as well as the two countries’ joint efforts on strategic investments, supply chain diversification and space exploration. The two leaders discussed the immense potential for the two countries to protect their people and the world’s future, and to create prosperity. They also reaffirmed the continued importance of the strong U.S.-UAE defense partnership to the security of both countries and regional stability.
The two leaders discussed the war in Gaza and efforts to secure a ceasefire and hostage agreement, with the Vice President emphasizing the importance of protecting innocent civilians and maintaining the flow of life-saving humanitarian aid. The two leaders discussed the importance of continuing to coordinate to end this war and plan for its aftermath. They also discussed the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and our efforts to reach a diplomatic solution that will prevent an escalation and allow residents on both sides of the border to return to their homes.
The Vice President expressed deep concern about the conflict in Sudan, which has displaced nearly 10 million people and left 25 million in need of humanitarian assistance. He sounded the alarm at the millions of people displaced by the war and the atrocities committed by the warring parties against civilians. He stressed the vital importance of bringing the warring parties to the negotiating table, ending the conflict, and ensuring free access to humanitarian assistance. The two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to de-escalating the conflict, alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people, ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches the Sudanese people, and ensuring that Sudan does not again become a magnet for international terrorist organizations.
