X/Twitter will soon be changing the way the blocking feature works so that users will no longer be able to stop those they block from seeing their posts.
The news was revealed on Monday night by web developer Nima Ouji, who tweeted: “X is removing the current block button, meaning if your account is public, your posts will be visible to blocked users too!”
The reasons for the change are not yet clear, but users speculate that the move is a way for the company to ensure that everyone can see ads, rather than blocking them.
It’s about time this happened.
The block feature blocks the account from participating in public posts, but does not block them from viewing public posts.

Concerns were also raised about the safety of users who were victims of stalking or targeted harassment, claiming that their safety was being threatened.
In response to Musk’s comments, Ouji said, “Good move!” and “The public account block button was a stupid feature because anyone could view posts from incognito mode in their browser.”
Musk’s dislike of the block button is well-known and he has tried multiple times to remove it in the past.
Last year, Musk said the feature “doesn’t make sense” and that it “should be phased out in favor of a more powerful mute feature.”
He also threatened to stop users from blocking people on the platform altogether, except through direct messages.
But so far none of his attempted changes have been successful.
In May, X/Twitter announced that if a user who has blocked you replies to your post, you’ll be able to see their reply.
The company argued that the move was part of the platform’s ongoing effort to “align blocking with our vision as a public town square.”
In August, Twitter was banned in Brazil after it ignored a high court order to suspend dozens of accounts accused of spreading false information.
A judge then fined him £625,000 for every day the social media platform was accessible in the country.
