Elle King opens up about ‘toxic’ relationship with father Rob Schneider: ‘He’s just not a nice person’
Last month, King spoke with Jelly Roll’s wife, Bunny XO, on the “Dumb Blonde” podcast, revealing that there was a time when he “didn’t speak to her for four or five years,” and also opened up about some of the “hurtful and really stupid” situations he was in as a child.
The country singer never expected his conversation with Bunny XO to pique his family’s interest, but he doesn’t regret sharing the childhood story.

“I never dreamed it would become a topic of conversation. I was just talking about my childhood and the truth,” King told People magazine. “I wasn’t trying to hurt him. A lot of people have said, ‘How can she say that about her family?’ and ‘It should all be kept private.’ No, it’s not. Sometimes you just have to say something and get it off your chest so you don’t have to carry it forever.”
After the podcast episode was released, Schneider publicly apologized, but King said the apology meant nothing.

“Your dad was one of the people I looked up to when I was growing up,” Bunny told King last month about the “Deuce Bigalow” actor. King described her relationship with her father as having its own unique ups and downs. “When I put out a record, people finally started asking about my dad,” she said. “My dad called me and said, ‘Don’t talk about me in the press.'”
She recalled, “If I was going to spend the summer with my dad, it would be on a movie set. I’d just be buried in the chaos. If I messed up or talked about filming, I’d be in real trouble.”

Bunny asked, “Did you ever feel like you two were connected?” King replied, “I never did until I was much older.”
The “Ex’s & Oh’s” singer recalled, “I was a really fat kid. My dad sent me to obesity camp, and one year I sprained my ankle and I couldn’t lose the weight, so that caused some problems.”
She added: “It’s very harmful and very stupid.”

Bunny interjected, “Did your dad ever try to help you?” King replied, “No, he never did. I never needed your help.”
“He didn’t have a very good reputation. I don’t want anything to do with him. He’s just not a nice person. As much as I wish someone would change, I can’t control other people’s actions. I can’t control their emotions. I can only control how I react and how I feel. Sometimes I get angry and I explode and I lose my mind,” she said.

“I tried every angle. I tried letters, I tried softening them, I tried yelling them out loud… My dad forgot every single birthday. I spent my 18th birthday at summer school and everyone bought me cupcakes, and when I got home he’d forgotten my birthday,” King added.
