BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Police in Birmingham, Alabama are investigating a mass shooting that left many people caught in the crossfire, ultimately leaving four dead and 18 injured.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said in an email early Sunday morning that the shooting happened late Saturday night in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South, a popular entertainment district in the city.
Officers responded to the scene in the city’s Five Points South entertainment district to find two men and a woman on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced them dead at the scene.

Medical staff at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital pronounced another man who was shot dead, Fitzgerald said.
He said as of 6 a.m. Sunday, police had identified 22 victims with life-threatening and non-life-threatening injuries.
Fitzgerald said no arrests were immediately made and investigators have not yet identified the shooter’s target.
“Investigators believe this shooting was not random and stemmed from an isolated incident in which multiple victims were caught in the crossfire,” Fitzgerald said.
The Five Points South neighborhood has plenty of entertainment options, restaurants and bars, and tends to get busy on Saturday nights.
