Statistical attack: Barcelona’s 17-year dominance over Villarreal remains unchallenged
Barcelona are due to host Villarreal later today in a showdown between two of Spain’s most in-form teams.
The Yellow Submarines are well-rested and in good form as they enjoy home-field advantage, while Barcelona come into the match fresh from a midweek defeat to AS Monaco.
Recent Advantages
Ahead of kick-off on Sunday night, some interesting statistics have emerged about Barcelona’s historic win at Villarreal’s home ground, the Estadi de la Cerámica.
Barcelona have been dominant at the stadium in recent years, unbeaten in their last 16 matches, with 12 wins and just four draws.

What’s even more interesting is that the last time Barcelona lost at La Ceramica was on 20 October 2007, when the stadium was still called El Madrigal. Villarreal beat Barça 3-1 that night, but they would not enjoy such luck again for the next 17 years.
However, what is noteworthy is Villarreal’s wins over Barcelona in Catalonia, most recently last season when they came from behind to beat Xavi’s side 5-3.
Barcelona have dominated matches at La Ceramica, which is usually regarded as a fortress for home teams and even one of the most fearsome stadiums for visitors.
Even Real Madrid has struggled at this stadium in recent years, winning just one of their last eight matches. In fact, Real Madrid have only won three of their last 13 matches at La Ceramica.
