UC has been surprisingly good so far this season, sitting at 3-0 heading into its Atlantic Coast Conference debut, while preseason top-10 team FSU is 0-3.
The Bears were even more dominant at the X. “I’ve never seen fans so organized and so intent on mocking their opponent,” posted one Iowa college football fan. “Give Cal the honors, they deserve it.”
While Cal’s football-related Twitter presence has exploded recently, what Davie calls the “burner community” has been around for years, posting memes and interacting with one another online and on a separate “Write for California” substack that purports to post content by, for and about the Golden Bears.
One of the first coordinated meme campaigns by Burner began last year when the Football Team hired former interim head coach Jake Spavital as its new offensive coordinator after the 2022 season.
“He’s made it clear he’s going to target offensive linemen. [also known as] “Hogs,” Davie said. Memes on many burner accounts focused on the team’s need for more offensive linemen because of Spavital — “#hogs4spav,” Daily Cal reported.
Since then, there have been many more Burners, with even more joining the ranks in recent weeks.
The person behind the @wokemobfootball account grew up a UC fan and attended a few games a year throughout her college years, but didn’t commit to UC until this season, when “UC tweets started trickling up on my main Twitter page,” she said.
