Actress Jenna Ortega revealed in an interview with The New York Times published over the weekend that she deleted the social media platform X/Twitter several years ago after seeing AI-generated pornographic images when she was a minor.
“I hate AI,” Ortega, now 21, told The New York Times, but acknowledged that the technology “could be used for incredible things.”
“Did I, at 14, create a Twitter account because I had to, and enjoy looking at salacious edited content of myself as a child? No,” she said. “It’s horrifying. It’s corrupting. It’s wrong.”
The “Beetlejuice” star likened AI to Pandora’s box, saying, “AI is already out there and we have to deal with the consequences.”
“I used to have a Twitter account, and they were like, ‘Oh, you have to do that, you have to create your own image,'” Ortega continued. She also said that after her show, Wednesday, aired in 2022, she deleted her X account entirely after receiving a surge in unsolicited “ridiculous images and photos.” “It was gross, it made me feel bad, it made me uncomfortable,” she said. “I just deleted it because I couldn’t say anything without seeing that stuff. I just woke up one day and was like, ‘Oh, I don’t need this anymore,’ so I deleted it.”
