The NOLA Project has selected a new artistic director, the third such director for a local theater company.
Tenaji Wallace, a New Orleans native, has been selected to direct the 20-year-old theater company. She most recently served as associate artistic director of Radical Buffoons and will succeed AJ Allegra, who served as artistic director of The NOLA Project from 2007 to 2023.
Wallace has been working with the theatre company since 2022, appearing in Catch the Wall, Measure for Measure and White. She has also directed Tell It to Me Sweet, School Girls; Or, An African Mean Girls Play and The Colored Museum.
She studied acting, voice and movement at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York and has been performing professionally for over 15 years.
“I am honored to serve as artistic director of The NOLA Project,” Wallace said in a press release. “My vision is to continue to push the boundaries to create bold theater while celebrating the vibrant and diverse voices that make the New Orleans community unique.”
The company’s 20th season is expected to be announced soon.
