HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Just in time for the start of the new season, members of the Wahiawa United Football Club received a much-needed donation.
Earlier this month, a fire at Wahiawa Area Park destroyed all of the youth program’s equipment, and on Tuesday the group received a check for $10,000 from the Downtown Athletic Club and state Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz.
This money will be used to replace some of the last remaining items.
One of the club’s leaders and coaches is former University of Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz, who said he has been doing all he can since the fire.
“Right now we’re putting out slippers instead of cones and trying to make something happen, which would be a big help,” he said. “We would have made it happen. We would have found a way to make it happen, but if we have help, it will be a lot better. It will be a lot easier and it will definitely improve the program.”
Donations like this demonstrate the community’s support for such programs.
“This shows that we’re not alone in this effort, other people care about these kids too,” Moniz added.
“So we want to make sure they continue on their path to success, learn teamwork and participate in productive activities,” said State Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz.
In addition to monetary donations, the ILWU also donated shipping containers to house the new equipment.
