Serie A clubs Empoli and Cagliari have added Nigerian forward David Okereke to their transfer target lists ahead of the summer transfer deadline, according to a report from Soccernet.ng.
Okereke, who currently plays for Serie B side Cremonese, spent the second half of last season on loan at Torino.
However, the experience was largely forgettable as the former Club Brugge star made just nine league appearances, starting just three and scoring zero goals.
Nevertheless, Okereke is a respected figure in Serie A, having scored 14 goals in appearances for Venezia and Cremonese.
Two of those goals came against AS Roma under Jose Mourinho: Okereke scored the winner in a 3-2 win over Roma in November 2021 and scored in the first minute of a 1-1 draw in May 2022.
Following Okereke’s success so far, the former Nigeria youth international has attracted interest from two top-flight teams, Cagliari and Empoli.
According to CagliariNews, Cagliari like Okereke’s profile and are ready to move for the attacker if the club approves the sale of centre-forward Gianluca Lapadula.
According to Calcio Spezia, Empoli appear to be more serious about signing Okereke than Cagliari, with the club having made an offer for the Nigerian player.
Lagos-born Okereke will join Cremonese in 2022 for a transfer fee of just over €2 million, with his contract expiring in June 2025.
