Pimpri-Chinchwad police have arrested a man and detained his minor accomplice in connection with a series of high-end bike thefts, with the suspect allegedly stealing at least 18 bikes across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The accused has been identified as Abhishek Mallappa Havalekar (21), a native of Shahpuri in Satara and residing in Chakan with his minor companions.

The suspect was arrested after analysing 60-70 CCTV footages based on a complaint that two expensive bikes were stolen from Sneharaj Apartment on Banar Mahrunge Road. The suspect confessed to stealing 18 bikes and all the bikes worth a total of Rs 89 lakh were recovered from his possession. Police claim to have solved 16 cases of bike theft registered in Hinjewadi, Sanghvi, Wakad, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Chatushrungi, Chandanagar, Bharati Vidyapeeth and Satara police stations.
Pimpri Chinchwad Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Doipode said, “The accused has been on his own since he left home after an argument with his parents. He learnt how to hack bike thieves online and was targeting cars parked at unmonitored spots on CCTV cameras and on the highway.”
