Former WDSU Sports Director Lo Brown received one of two Lifetime Achievement Awards from the New Orleans Press Club on Saturday night. The New Orleans Press Club presented its second Lifetime Achievement Award recipient to longtime WWL-TV news anchor Erik Paulsen. Brown became New Orleans’ first on-air African-American sports anchor and reporter at WDSU-TV in 1978 and became a fixture in the Crescent City’s sports scene. After a year at KPLC-TV in Lake Charles (1980-81), Brown returned to WDSU, where he stayed for 21 years, 18 of which were as one of the market’s leading sports reporters, before switching to education coverage for the final three. In 1983, his five-part series on black student athletes won the Louisiana Associated Press Award for Best Sports Series. He received the New Orleans Press Club honor for highlighting the Liberty track and field meet. The National Association of Black Journalists’ Sports Task Force awarded him the 2012 Sam Lacy Pioneer Award. A few months ago, the LSWA presented him with the prestigious Mac Russo Award, given to members of the association who have enhanced the ideals and reputation of the organization. A four-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, Brown is a member of the Louisiana Sports, Allstate Sugar Bowl, Greater New Orleans and New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame selection committees. A New Orleans native, he attended George Washington Carver High School, graduated from John F. Kennedy High School and earned a degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. While continuing to cover sports in and around his hometown, he also serves as the director of community relations for the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation. Brown has worked in Event Production as a producer and host of sports programming for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association and the Sun Belt Conference. He also previously worked as the associate director of public relations at the University of New Orleans.
