(MENAFN – Khaleej Times) Starting September 1, UAE residents and tourists travelling to Schengen countries will be allowed to carry up to 100ml of liquids in their carry-on baggage.
This was announced by the European Council, which said the decision was a temporary measure to respond to any threat.
The Schengen area is a very popular tourist and business destination for UAE residents, and a large number of European nationals also live and work in the UAE.

“The European Commission will temporarily restrict liquid screening at EU airports using Explosives Detection Systems in Cabin Baggage (EDSCB). These systems, which are installed at some EU airports, currently allow passengers to bring liquid containers larger than 100ml. However, from 1 September 2024, in airports operating this type of equipment, the maximum permitted size of individual liquid containers will revert to the standard 100ml,” the regulator said.
“Airports that already have a 100ml limit on liquids or that have not installed EDSCB devices will not be affected by the change. This precautionary measure is not in response to a new threat but rather to address a temporary technical issue, which will be implemented in coordination with the EU’s international partners,” it added.
Most airports around the world have restrictions on the amount of liquids passengers can bring on board in their carry-on luggage.
The Commission added that it was working with Member States and the European Civil Aviation Council to develop rapid technical solutions for safe and secure air travel.
Finland’s national airline Finnair also announced that from September 1, 2024, only liquid containers up to 100ml will be permitted in carry-on baggage at European airports, including Helsinki Airport.
“The total amount of liquids permitted per passenger remains at 2 litres. This change does not affect passengers transferring at Helsinki Airport,” the company said.
