Abdullah Balara, Permanent Secretary of State for Energy and Sustainability, Kenya, participated in the United Nations Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM) in Nairobi, Kenya, along with government representatives, experts and organisations.
Since its inception in April 2024, the UN CETM Panel has exchanged views on important files related to the mining sector and ensured participation in productive discussions on the development of global voluntary guidelines on critical minerals.
At this final meeting, panel members stressed the importance of forming a stronger foundation and focusing on international cooperation to achieve mutual and collective benefits regarding mining.
Mr. Barrar commended the UN Panel’s achievement in aligning global readiness to achieve net-zero targets with the urgency of staying within the 1.5°C target, and stressed the importance of strengthening environmental responses based on sustainable policies and practices that will usher in a new era of climate action and protect local communities from all climate and environmental damages associated with the extractive process.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of building trust at a broader level to achieve the desired transformation outcomes and create a favorable environment for mineral-rich countries to strengthen their economic growth. He noted the importance of attracting responsible investments in the mining sector to support these countries, increase their adaptive capacity and ensure a smooth transition to renewable and clean energy.
The UAE continues to showcase its commitment to climate action both at home and abroad through the UN Secretary-General’s CETM Panel, green investments and global financial commitments. In light of this, the UAE has announced that it will co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference with Senegal, building on its successful hosting of COP28 in 2023.
