When the San Francisco Giants didn’t sell him at the trade deadline, it was clear the team was committed to making the playoffs.
The front office believed they had the best starting rotation in the league and had a chance to perform well late and win enough games to clinch a wild-card spot.
However, after losing their final home game against the lower-ranked Chicago White Sox, they are now just one point away from a .500 winning percentage and 3.5 points behind the Atlanta Braves for the final playoff spot.
There’s still time for the Giants to continue their winning streak, which is something everyone around this team has been hoping for all season.
As they continue to search for ways to continue their winning streak, the team may be interested in acquiring catcher Elias Diaz, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
“For the major league minimum, San Francisco could add the 33-year-old Diaz during the playoff-eligible period. The timing also means they can retain backup Curt Casali, who will be in the mix when the slots expand on Sept. 1 and the Giants are thin at upper-level catching,” she wrote.
This comes shortly after Patrick Bailey was placed on injured reserve.
If they need someone who can provide offensive firepower, the 2023 All-Star Game MVP would be the right choice.
The 33-year-old was batting .270/.315/.378 with five home runs, 23 extra bases, 36 RBIs and an 80 wRC+ when he was shockingly released by the Colorado Rockies. Those numbers are sure to drop in the pitcher-favorable ballpark the Giants play in, but he still provides value as a catcher, having prevented a league-leading 42 percent of his bases since 2021.
At the very least, he’s someone San Francisco should do its due diligence on.
If Bailey ends up missing more games than expected with an injury, the team cannot afford to go into this series of games without fielding the best lineup possible.
