The City of Dayton Poet Laureate serves a two-year term with the option to renew for one additional term. Dayton Mayor Jeffrey Mims Jr. appoints the City of Dayton Poet Laureate after the applications are reviewed by the City of Dayton Poet Laureate Selection Committee. The City of Dayton’s local arts agency and Culture Works, acting as the United Arts Fund, act as fiscal agent and manage the application process.
The Poet Laureate for the City of Dayton will:
Participate annually in civic events such as Dayton City Commission meetings, official functions, cultural events, and other similar events to encourage literary reading and writing by a wide range of citizens, including young people; Celebrate the City of Dayton by creating poetry that reflects the diversity, landscape, urban landscape, cultural heritage, and civic identity of the City of Dayton and the region; Promote literacy by encouraging poetry in schools and foster the development of poetry among young people. Each applicant must meet the following criteria:
Be 18 years of age or older, currently live or work in the City of Dayton, and will live or work in the City of Dayton for the term of your appointment (two-year term) Have a record of commissioned or published work and recognition in your field that demonstrates literary excellence and has previously worked to increase the visibility of poetry Provide any additional relevant information/experience, such as print or online publishing of poetry, leadership in an organization or group whose primary purpose is poetry, and other experience that demonstrates your qualifications and enthusiasm for the position of Poet Laureate for the City of Dayton Learn MoreNeon’s 19th Annual Festival Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Stories Wins Grant
