Music played a major role on the second night of the Democratic National Convention, as a string of delegates pledged their state’s support for Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to the sound of chart-topping hits during the ceremonial roll call on August 20.
Many of the songs were related to states showing their support. The crowd erupted in cheers when Jay-Z’s Grammy-winning “Empire State of Mind” was played at the United Center before New York Governor Kathy Hockle cast her state’s delegate vote. Vermont native Noah Kahan’s aptly named “Stick Season” was selected as the state’s roll call song. Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off,” Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” and Sabrina Carpenter’s song of the summer nominee “Espresso” were also performed during the ceremony. Atlanta native Lil Jon wowed the crowd by taking to the stands to perform a snippet of his hit “Turn Down for What” in homage to his home state of Georgia. Surprise appearances by celebrities such as “Goonies” actor Sean Astin and acclaimed film director Spike Lee added star power.
From “Texas Hold ‘Em” to “California Love,” Yahoo Entertainment’s DNC Night 2 playlist features songs that were played as the roll call turned into a dance party.
